Nigerian forward, Deborah Abiodun set an unwanted record for Nigeria at the 2023 Women's World Cup as she became the first player to be red-carded at the tournament.
The 2023 Women's World Cup is taking place in Australia and New Zealand and the Super Falcons played their first game at the tournament against Canada. The match ended in a draw.
Deborah Abiodun was first given a yellow card in the first half after a tackle against Christine Sinclair.
In the 97th minute, Abiodun was sent off after she brought down Ashley Lawrence, with her studs hitting the shin of the Canadian midfielder.
The Rivers United star will miss the Super Falcons' next game against Australia, according to Sportstar and Optus.
Canada, who had a penalty saved in the second half, looked most dangerous late on and Nigeria were forced to dig deep to hold on for a crucial point.
19-year-old Abiodun has reacted by posting a photo on her Twitter page and also tendering an apology to fans for her red card.

Nnadozie named player of the match
Earlier, Sports Brief reported how Super Falcons goalkeeper, Chiamaka Nnadozie was named the player of the match following her impressive performance for Nigeria against Canada in their first game at the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup.
Heading into the tie, the Super Falcons had been urged to make the fans at home happy and they certainly did their best against an equally determined side.
