  • Benjamin Mendy has been cleared of all charges of assault g the Cheshire Crown Court
  • Journalists approached the French defender but gave a short answer and whisked away
  • Mendy was released by Manchester City after his contract expired last month

Former Manchester City defender Benjamin Mendy was today cleared of all charges of assault and declared not guilty after nearly three years since a 24-year-old woman first alleged him.

He began his journey to clear his name in October 2020 after a woman alleged him of forceful intimacy at his Cheshire home, he denied the allegations and maintained it was consensual.

In January, he was cleared of the allegations from multiple women but the jury could not reach a definitive point on two cases which prompted a retrial scheduled for July.

Sky Sports reported that he was cleared of the remaining two cases by a jury of six men and six women and was declared not guilty at the Cheshire Crown Court.

Benjamin Mendy breaks silence

Sun Sport reported that he broke down in tears after his verdict was read, bringing an end to a legal battle which began in 2020 and cost him an important part of his football career and life.

He was approached by journalists outside the Chester Crown Court but he gave only a one-word answer and waved off other questions as he fought back his tears.

"Alhamdulillah," he said.

Mendy last played in 2021 and admitted the club stopped paying his salary in September 2021 despite being under contract. He was released last month at the expiration of his contract while awaiting his retrial.

His next step is unknown as he failed to respond to myriads of questions he was asked, one of which was if City manager Pep Guardiola supported him during the trials.

Man Utd retain Mason Greenwood

Sports Brief reported that Manchester United returned Mason Greenwood on their annual lists ahead of next season while their city rivals released Benjamin Mendy.

It caused a stir online as it came after all alleged cases of assault and Greenwood were dropped while the last two cases of the French defender were ordered for a retrial.

The Manchester United attacker is yet to be integrated into the team as the club continues to ponder over a decision.
