Edwin van der Sar is on the road to recovery.

The Dutch legend’s wife, Annemarie van Kesteren, gave a promising update regarding his condition, saying that he is “not in life-threatening danger.”

The former Ajax and Manchester United goalkeeper was rushed last week to an intensive care unit after suffering a bleed on his brain while on holiday in Croatia.

Van der Sar's health condition

Kesteren issued a statement through Dutch club Ajax, saying:

"Edwin is still in the intensive care unit, but is stable. Every time we get to visit him, he's communicative. We have to wait patiently to see how his situation will develop. He is not in life-threatening danger."

Van der Sar, who won 130 caps for the Netherlands, resigned from his role as chief executive of Ajax last May after the club finished third in the Dutch Eredivisie, per BBC.

He shouldered the blame for the team’s failure to secure a Champions League spot, the first time that has happened for Ajax since 2009.

Forever a Manchester United legend

His playing career ended in 2011 after the Red Devils lost to Barcelona in the UEFA Champions League final. He joined the Ajax board the following year and became the club’s chief executive in 2016.

Van der Sar made 266 appearances for Manchester United, helping them win four Premier League titles and the Champions League title in 2008, per ESPN.

Fans will forever remember his heroics in the final against Chelsea. He saved Nicolas Anelka’s spot kick in the penalty shootout, which gave United the win.

Mount to make preseason debut

Sports Brief recently reported on Mason Mount’s preseason debut for Manchester United.

He will make his first appearance for the Red Devils in the match against Leeds United.

Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane will also feature in the friendly.
