The Super Falcons of Nigeria have arrived in Australia ahead of the forthcoming 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

Despite winning the Africa Women’s Cup of Nations on a record 11 times, the Nigerian girls are yet to replicate the form on the world stage.

They are drawn in Group B alongside Canada, co-hosts Australia and the Republic of Ireland. Captain Onome Ebi, who will be making a record sixth appearance at the World Cup, says the team is out to surpass their round 16 ouster at the 2019 edition in France.

The 40-year-old said, via Punch:

“We have to do better than what we did at the last World Cup, regardless of whoever we play against.
“The goal is to make sure we do better than the previous appearances. We are not going to the World Cup to get beaten and go home, to get past the round 16 is what we are working towards. Nigeria as a whole is really looking forward to that.”

Meanwhile, Sports Brief earlier reported that the FIFA Women’s World Cup is bigger than ever, with a record 32 teams competing this year.

Eight countries benefited from the tournament’s expansion as they will make their debut at the competition that will be held in Australia and New Zealand.

Super Falcons beat New Zealand in friendly

Sports Brief earlier reported that the Super Falcons of Nigeria continued with their impressive form after beating New Zealand 3-0 in an international friendly encounter on April 11.

The Nigerian women's team started the duel well and almost opened the scoring in the fourth minute through Asisat Oshoala, while Jennifer Echegini and Desire Oparanozie completed the rout.
