  • The Super Eagles star also finished the term as the highest scorer with 26 goals
  • Osimhen has been ranked as the fourth-best striker for the past football season

Super Eagles strongman, Victor Osimhen, has been ranked as the fourth-best striker in the world by ESPN, according to their list of the 10 best scorers in the 2022/23 European league season.

Osimhen recorded his name in the Serie A history books over the last term, finishing as the top scorer in Italy's top flight with 26 goals, plus becoming the first African to win the league's Golden Boot.

Sports and entertainment network, ESPN has recognised the Nigerian's impressive performances and his contributions to a wholly successful season for Napoli.

As reported by Complete Sports, some unsurprising names made the top 10.

ESPN names 10 best strikers

In first place is Erling Haaland of Manchester City. This would be expected, since the Norwegian helped his team win the English Premier League, the FA Cup, and the UEFA Champions League in his first season.

Second place belongs to Karim Benzema, who recently switched Real Madrid for Al-Ittihad in Saudi Arabia. Tottenham Hotspur's Harry Kane claimed third place ahead of Osimhen.

Top 10 strikers per ESPN

1. Erling Haaland - Man City

2. Karim Benzema - Real Madrid (now Al-Ittihad)

3. Harry Kane - Tottenham

4. Victor Osimhen - Napoli

5. Robert Lewandowski - Barcelona

6. Gabriel Jesus - Arsenal

7. Randal Kolo Muani - Eintracht Frankfurt

8. Alexander Isak - Newcastle United

9. Dusan Vlahovic - Juventus

10. Jonathan David - Lille

Osimhen, a former Lille striker, is currently a transfer target for clubs like Manchester United and Chelsea, who are hoping to add the Nigerian marksman to their frontlines.

Osimhen backs Peseiro as coach

In news related to the striker, Sports Brief reported on Osimhen offering support for Jose Peseiro, claiming the Portuguese coach is the right man for the Nigerian job.

The Nigerian Football Federation chiefs are yet to make their final decision on the future of the current gaffer after the expiration of his contract at the end of last month.

Peseiro's journey as the handler of the Super Eagles boss started after the team failed to qualify for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, losing the playoffs versus Ghana.
