David Beckham found out Argentina superstar Lionel Messi will be joining his team Inter Miami with the rest of the world despite being a key catalyst behind the deal.
The seven-time Ballon d’Or winner shunned bids from Saudi Arabia and a return to Barcelona this summer to pen a deal with the Major League Soccer side after leaving Paris Saint-Germain.
According to the Daily Mirror, Beckham said that he discovered Messi's purchase was official after receiving millions of texts on his phone.
"A couple of weeks ago, I woke up to about a million messages on my phone. I was thinking, 'What's gone off? I don't usually get this many messages. All of a sudden, I hear Leo has come out and announced he's coming to Miami."
Messi is expected to arrive in Miami in the next few days, since his debut with the club is slated for July 21 against Cruz Azul in the League Cup, and his first game in the MLS would be on August 20, in front of his home supporters at DRV PNK Stadium, against Charlotte.
Inter Miami to sign Alba and Saurez
Meanwhile, Inter Miami is attempting to add two more former Barcelona players, Jordi Alba and Luis Suarez, for a reunion with Lionel Messi next season, Gistreel reports.
The MLS side has already secured the services of Sergio Busquets this summer and are now focused on bringing in more Barcelona ex-players to strengthen their squad.
Alba is available as a free agent after leaving Barcelona while Suarez currently plays for Brazilian side Gremio and could also reportedly join his former teammates in Miami.
