Former England striker Peter Crouch has shared what Wayne Rooney discussed about Cristiano Ronaldo following their infamous encounter at the 2006 FIFA World Cup.
Rooney and Ronaldo, who were teammates at Manchester United, found themselves on opposing sides during a highly charged match between England and Portugal, where a place in the semifinals was at stake.
Despite boasting a star-studded squad that included Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard, among other notable players, the English team suffered a significant setback, exiting the tournament in the quarterfinals through a penalty shootout.
Adding to the disappointment was Rooney's red card, which was instigated by Ronaldo, ultimately leading to his country's victory with the ex-Real Madrid forward scoring the decisive penalty.
Reflecting on the aftermath of Rooney's red card and England's subsequent defeat, the former striker, who has since moved into punditry, recounted the events that unfolded on That Peter Crouch Podcast.
What did Rooney say about Ronaldo?
“I was on the bus on the way back from the game. We see the footage of him winking, and Rooney’s not happy, obviously, he’s fuming - he’s just been played,”
“I think that did happen [Rooney texting Ronaldo asking ‘what the f*** was that?’]. There were definitely words exchanged.
Furthermore, Crouch revealed that the DC United coach had made it clear that he had no intentions of engaging in further conversation with the Portuguese phenom, a sentiment that Gary Neville supported.
“At first, he was like ‘, I’m never talking to him again’, ‘I’m not going to go back there and speak to him’.

Football“I remember Gary Neville was angry - obviously a teammate of Ronaldo’s - I remember us being so down and Wayne being gutted about it.”
The former Liverpool striker added, as quoted by Givemesport: “I left that camp thinking that Rooney and Ronaldo would never speak again. I left that World Cup thinking [Man Utd] would have to sell him. I didn’t think they’d sell Rooney. I thought they’d get a load of money for Ronaldo.
“I just thought Ronaldo has basically cheated him out of it. Wayne was getting a lot of stick back at home after going to the World Cup. I never thought they could ever share the same pitch again.
Despite their past conflict, the duo managed to reconcile and forged a formidable partnership at Manchester United, resulting in a multitude of trophies. Together, they secured three Premier League titles and the highly coveted Champions League trophy.
