Lionel Messi fans in the United States and worldwide who were hoping to see the Argentine play in the MLS All-Star Game will have to extend their wait, as the MLS rules would make the Argentine ineligible for participation.

According to the MLS regulations, the selection process for the All-Star Game involves a combination of fan, player, and media votes, resulting in 12 spots being awarded.

Additionally, DC United coach Wayne Rooney, who is the All-Star technical director, nominates 12 more players, while MLS Commissioner Don Garber has two additional selections to consider.

MLS All-Star selection process

Regarding the voting process, mlssoccer.com reports the criteria state that players must have participated in at least 50 per cent of their club's matches this season at the time the ballot was published on May 18. It is evident that Messi does not meet this requirement.

While the regulations currently prevent Messi from participating in the MLS All-Star Game due to his ineligibility, Marca reports there is a possibility that Commissioner Garber may attempt to grant him a direct pass considering the anticipation surrounding his arrival at Inter Miami.

This potential action would be deemed unfair to the other players. Players who did not qualify for the initial ballot can still be selected by either Rooney or Commissioner Garber, who has the final say.

Therefore, the decision of when Messi will wear the Inter Miami jersey will be at the discretion of both individuals. Messi is expected to join the team in Miami on 9 July.

The MLS All-Stars, led by former Manchester United forward Wayne Rooney, will face Premier League side Arsenal on July 19 at Audi Field, the home of DC United in Washington.

Lionel Messi’s MLS intentions revealed

Sports Brief previously reported new Inter Miami manager, Gerardo Martino revealed to the media what Messi’s intention was with his transfer to the MLS.

The Argentine manager opined that his reunion with Messi and Sergio Busquets is about winning — not Miami’s sunny beaches.
