  • Some players’ contracts will expire while new signings officially report in for duty
  • Fans probably forgot that these players are still contracted to Premier League clubs

The start of a new year for European football clubs officially begins tomorrow, as clubs battle to complete some deals before midnight today to balance their books.

Players will be out of contract in mere hours, registration for new players will start ahead of the new season, and loaned-out stars will begin looking for options or to return to parent clubs.

Some forgotten stars are still under contract with Premier League clubs, including Dele Alli. Sports Brief looks at some of these surprising and not-so-surprising names.

1. Dele Alli

The downward turn his career has taken made many forget he is still a Premier League player with Everton, where he is contracted until the summer of 2024. Alli will likely return to the club to assess his options after a failed loan move to Besiktas, even though Sean Dyche has not ruled out his future at Goodison Park, as the Guardian reports.

2. Philippe Coutinho

How the mighty have fallen - the Brazilian was one of the league’s hottest stars before a move to Barcelona turned his career upside down. Coutinho had a successful loan spell at Bayern Munich before moving to Aston Villa. He is contracted to the Villans until 2026 but could be on the move with Besiktas interested.

3. Donny van de Beek

One of Dutch football’s brightest prospects saw a move to Manchester United turn him into a forgotten star. He had a short and mostly poor loan spell at Everton last season, and not even his former manager, Erik ten Hag’s appointment at United helped him. He is under contract until 2025 but could leave this summer.

4. Nicolas Pepe

The Ivorian recorded 18 G/A in his first season after a club-record £72 million move to Arsenal, but his second season was all downhill. He had a poor loan spell in France with OGC Nice last season. With one year left on his contract, the Gunners will probably not risk losing him for free.

5. Callum Hudson-Odoi

The English youngster has a year left on his current Blues contract. He came through the club’s academy but his career took a bad turn after his Achilles tendon injury before the 2019 UEFA Europa League. He recently returned from a loan spell at Bayer Leverkusen.

6. Baba Rahman

The Ghanaian full-back could be Chelsea’s longest-serving player if captain, Cesar Azpilicueta, departs this summer. Rahman joined in 2015 and has gone out on seven loans. He is contracted until 2024, but the Evening Standard reports the club are in talks with PAOK FC in Greece to allow him to leave for free.

Iwobi explains Alli’s downfall

Sports Brief also reported on Alex Iwobi blaming Alli's downfall on himself, claiming the Englishman's poor work ethic is a major factor in his continued decline.

The Everton loanee was pictured in bed with friends and with laughing gas tanks just days after it was confirmed he would be returning to the Premier League side.
