Ilkay Gundogan has reached into the depths of his heart to send a passionate message to the Manchester City family after completing a switch to Barcelona.
Gundogan was Pep Guardiola’s first signing at City in 2016 and captained the club to their first-ever UEFA Champions League trophy en route to completing the historic treble.
He leaves the club after seven years at the expiration of his contract, having rejected an extension offer which he feels undervalued him.
Barca confirmed in an official statement that he signed a two-year contract with an option for a third and has a release clause of €400m.
Gundogan’s message to City fans
The German wrote an episode on Players Tribune and sent a heartfelt message to the Citizens affirming his love and support for the club.
“Today is bittersweet. Goodbyes are never easy, but it’s even harder with this team,” he wrote. “I am happy to say that I’m leaving here as a champion, and I have nothing but love for the club in my heart. How many footballers can say goodbye as the captain of a treble team?”
He also shared a video on Twitter of a compilation of his journey in Manchester.
Gundogan’s message to Barca fans
The 32-year-old also had a message for his new fans as part of his unveiling in a video shared on Twitter by the club's official account.
“Hola Culers, I’m very happy to sign for Barca, excited for this new journey and to join this beautiful club. See you soon. Forca Barca!” he said.

Sports Brief reported that Gundogan made FA Cup final history after scoring the fastest goal in the final of the world’s oldest competition in the 2-1 win over Man United.
