Players of the various national teams of Ghana have reacted to the retirement of legendary Black Stars forward, Asamoah Gyan.

The former Black Stars captain decided to finally hang his boots up at the age of 37 after two decades of memorable football with Ghana.

Gyan, in an emotional moment during the Annual General Meeting of Afrixembank, confirmed the end of his career.

"I want to take this great opportunity, a stage that is difficult in every footballer's career, a moment all footballers do not wish, but when nature dawns, that thin voice will keep echoing into the ears... it is time... that voice has been clear in my ears, and I have succumbed to it, it is time. It is time to hand the jersey and boots in glory as I officially retire from active football," he said, as quoted by Ghanasoccernet.

The former Sunderland and Stade Rennais striker made 109 appearances for the Black Stars, scoring 51 goals. He remains Ghana's all-time top scorer at international level.

His teammates and some emerging Ghanaian stars took to social media to congratulate him on his retirement.

Gyan announces retirement

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that legendary Ghanaian footballer, Asamoah Gyan has announced his retirement from football after a career that spanned almost two decades.

The 37-year-old, who remains Ghana's all-time leading scorer, finally decided to end his career after almost three years without playing actively.

Gyan confirmed his retirement at the 30th Afreximbank Annual Meeting held in Accra on Tuesday, June 20, 2023.
