  • The Spaniard was sedated twice by medics with great concern over his long-term health

Spanish goalkeeper, Sergio Rico, is said to be out of a coma, three weeks after suffering an injury in a horse-riding accident in Huelva, in his home country.

The keeper suffered severe head injuries after the accident in May and was twice sedated by medics, who had major concerns about his long-term health.

Rico’s wife confirmed to the Spanish press outside his hospital in Sevilla that his condition had improved.

The Paris Saint-Germain player's absence had led to tributes from his Ligue 1 teammates towards the end of last season.

Rico collided with a horse and was left in a coma, with reports earlier this month stating he was improving but remained in a serious condition.

Speaking outside the hospital on Monday, Alba Silva spoke of the upswing in her husband's condition.

She told Telecinco: "[He's] taking small steps forward and the truth is that we already see the light a little more. Little by little he is recovering and I knew from the beginning that he was going to get better because he is a champion."

However, she reiterated the need to go step-by-step and be patient.

PSG players pay Rico tribute

As reported by Goal, PSG players paid tribute to Rico with special T-shirts before the end of the season, while his family have said they will restrict updates to major developments only.

The keeper will remain at the Virgen del Rocio Hospital in Seville where he is being treated, with reports stating he is making gestures as his wife urged for patience with his recovery.

Rico was on loan at Fulham for the 2018/19 season from La Liga side, Sevilla, and currently plies his trade in France with Paris Saint-Germain.

PSG's Sergio Rico hospitalised

Sports Brief previously reported on the events surrounding Rico’s accident, after the 29-year-old was seriously injured in a horse-riding accident.

The goalkeeper was back holidaying in his native Spain in El Rocio, following the French champions' confirmation of their historic 11th Ligue 1 title.
