  • Romelu Lukaku has backed Erling Haaland and Kylian Mbappe to usher in a new era of football
  • The Belgian striker contends the two youngsters are on course to replace Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo
  • Mbappe and Haaland have been in fine shape this season, with the latter scoring 52 goals in his debut season with Man City

Romelu Lukaku has claimed that Kylian Mbappe and Erling Haaland are the two players who will be taking the football mantle from Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Ronaldo and Messi have dominated the football scene for years now, with the two icons winning an incredible 12 Ballon d'Or awards between them.

While the duo's rivalry has been attributed to their success, their longevity and dominance have also helped them win top titles and honours.

However, the two have already entered the twilight years of their football careers, as age catches up with them.

Ronaldo is currently plying his trade in the Saudi Arabian top-flight, while Messi has also been linked with a possible move to Asia after he left Paris Saint-Germain at the end of this season.

Lukaku backs Haaland, Mbappe

Lukaku has now singled out Mbappe and Haaland as the two players who are on course to replace Ronaldo and Messi.

Metro UK reports that Haaland was unstoppable in his debut season with Manchester City, having scored 52 goals in 52 games across competitions.

Mbappe was equally in fine shape for Paris Saint-Germain, with the 24-year-old bagging 41 goals in 43 games for the French giants this term.

Lukaku now contends the two youngsters are the future of football and could dominate the scene in the next 10 years.

"I think he (Haaland) will dominate, with Mbappe, world football for the next 10 years," Lukaku told CNN.
"They will be fighting from the new generation… They will really take over (from Messi and Ronaldo) in the next two years," he added.

Haaland vs. Mbappe: Simeone picks

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone has weighed in on the discussion over who is better between Kylian Mbappe and Erling Haaland.

Both Mbappe and Haaland have been deemed as heir-apparent to the iconic duo of Ronaldo and Messi, who have been tagged with the status of Greatest Footballers of All Time.

Although Ronaldo and Messi boast an impressive tally of 12 Ballon d'Ors combined, it is important to highlight that the legendary duo is no longer in their prime, and the younger generation of players is poised to assume the mantle sooner rather than later.
