  • Ousmane Dembele was spotted touching the UEFA Champions League trophy
  • The Frenchman’s time at Barcelona has been plagued with injuries
  • Dembele is yet to win the UCL since making his record move from Dortmund

Players have rarely hidden their desire to win Europe’s most prestigious club football title, and Ousmane Dembele couldn’t help himself either, as he made his intentions clear through his actions at Barcelona’s farewell ceremony.

Barcelona have one more game to play in La Liga this season, but it appears that Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba have played their final games in Blaugrana colours.

After all, it is only fitting that their final moments as Barcelona players remain standing ovations at the Spotify Camp Nou, with the crowd chanting their names.

According to The Athletic, Barcelona conducted an official farewell event for the defensive midfielder on Wednesday, while Alba had his farewell a day earlier.

There were tears shed, jokes made, and memories rekindled as the left-back gave one final interview and expressed his gratitude towards the club.

As part of the farewell event yesterday, the administration displayed the various accolades won by the defender during his time at Barcelona. One of the silverware pieces on display was the UEFA Champions League trophy that he won in 2014-15.

Dembele touches the UCL trophy

During the event, Ousmane Dembele was seen walking up to the prestigious trophy and touching it. The forward’s action unsurprisingly caught the eye of the media as an open indication of how deeply he desires to win it.

In fact, in a recent interview with French TV channel Téléfoot, Dembele spoke about the Champions League and called it the one accolade he desired the most at Barcelona.

“My biggest dream is to win a Champions League with Barça. Winning this trophy with the club you love is the holy grail.”

The Blaugrana have suffered no end in the European competition in recent years, having crashed out in the group stages in the last two seasons. Dembele, meanwhile, has had his own struggles with injury and has not had the impact he would have liked to in the UCL.

Heading into the 2023-24 edition as Spanish Champions, there is a sense of positivity in Barcelona about their next European venture.

One can only hope that the Frenchman shines this season in the gruelling competition, for it would significantly boost the team’s chances of winning the trophy.

Dembele to extend Barca contract

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that Dembele is keen to extend his stay at the Camp Nou.

The French attacker’s contract expires at the end of the 2024 season, and he currently has a €50 million release clause.

The relatively cheap clause means that other teams could pay to sign the player without having to negotiate with the club. Barcelona has since proposed a new contract to the French forward.
