  • There are several managers in world football currently without work
  • Former Real Madrid manager Zinedine Zidane tops the list of highly-rated managers who are currently unattached
  • Some of the managers on the list have seen their stock drop because of their latest stints, but still remain world class

Being a manager can be tasking in football, as the sport is very unforgiving when a manager fails to deliver results.

The just concluded Premier League campaign saw a number of managers lose their jobs, with only 10 bosses starting and ending the season with their clubs.

With the various top 5 leagues set to take a two-month break, there are likely to be some stunning managerial appointments, particularly because of the availability of some big names currently without a job.

Sports Brief takes a look at some of the top managers in world football who are currently out of work:

1. Zinedine Zidane

Zizou is one manager who fans are used to seeing lift trophies, especially the Champions Leeague.

The Frenchman has not been in management since the 2020/21 season when he left Real Madrid after a second spell in charge, according to ESPN.

2. Luis Enrique

The former Barcelona man is one of the most highly-rated managers in world football, and is currently not attached to any team since leaving the Spain national team after the 2022 World Cup.

His spell as Spain coach did not go as planned, but no one can take away what he achieved at club level with Barcelona, where he won two league titles, three Copa del Reys and the Champions League, as per Transfermkt.

3. Antonio Conte

Conte’s relationship with Tottenham Hotspur came crashing down spectacularly in March 2023 as the Italian walked away from the North London club after just 16 months in charge.

Spurs were in contention for European qualification at the time but they have since experienced a significant dip, ending the season in 8th place.

Despite his sacking, Conte remains one of the best managers in the world, as long as he gets a club willing to back his plans, financially.

4. Julian Nagelsmann

A large number of fans still feel to date that Julian Nagelsmann’s sacking at Bayern Munich was rather harsh, as the young manager was still in the hunt for the Bundesliga while also fighting for the Champions League.

Since making his managerial breakthrough with Hoffenheim in 2016, Nagelsmann has risen up the ranks, and famously guided RB Leipzig to the Champions League semi finals in 2020 where they lost to PSG.

5. Brendan Rodgers

Brendan Rodgers finds himself in unfamiliar territory as he is without a club for the first time since 2016.

While arguably not at the level of the likes of Luis Enrique and Zidane, Rodgers is an excellent manager in his own right.

One piece of silverware he will hold dearly is the FA Cup, which he won with Leicester City for the first time in the club’s history.

6. Graham Potter

After a disastrous spell as Chelsea manager, Graham Potter’s ratings might have possibly dropped significantly.

But this should not discredit his past wok as his methodical approach to coaching saw him develop clubs like Östersunds FK, Swansea and especially Brighton to what they are today.

Mourinho on challenges of AS Roma job

Sports Brief also reported on Jose Mourinho’s brutally honest take on the Roma job, two years since he took charge of the club.

There is growing speculation Mourinho will leave Italy at the end of this season, and the gaffer did not rule this out in his post-match remarks after the Europa League final but instead highlighted the problematic part of the job.

“I want to stay at Roma, but my players deserve more and I also deserve more. I’m a little tired of being a coach, a man of communication, the face of the club that says we were robbed after every game. I’m tired of acting on every front,” He said.
