FootballManchester City Reportedly Open Talks to Sign Chelsea Midfielder This Summer
- Mateo Kovacic is staring at an uncertain future with Chelsea ahead of the summer transfer window
- The Croatian is yet to renew his contract with the Blues with his current deal expiring next summer
- Manchester City are believed to be eyeing his services as Pep Guardiola shops for a star midfielder
Manchester City have reportedly opened talks over the potential summer transfer of Chelsea midfielder, Mateo Kovacic.
Kovacic has been one of Chelsea's standout players since he joined the west London club from Real Madrid in 2018.
However, a string of injuries have hampered his development this season, limiting him to just 17 Premier League starts.
According to Metro UK, the Croatian's contract with the Blues is set to expire in the summer of 2024, with talks over a new deal reportedly hitting a snag.
It is believed that Chelsea are open to cashing in on him this summer rather than losing him on a free transfer next summer.
Man City, Kovacic in talks?
Reports now claim that City have opened talks with Kovacic over a potential switch to the Etihad Stadium.
Transfer guru, Fabrizio Romano claimed the newly-crowned Premier League champions have met with the midfielder's representatives regarding a summer move.
"Manchester City have opened concrete talks to sign Mateo Kovacic in the summer. Positive discussions took place with player’s camp in the last few days over personal terms," he tweeted.
Pep Guardiola is understood to be shopping for a formidable midfielder, owing to Kalvin Phillips' struggles this season.
Additionally, City are also dealing with a contractual quagmire involving Ilkay Gundogan, who has been linked with a possible summer exit.
The German star is out of contract at the Etihad Stadium and could depart on a free transfer. Arsenal are said to be the leading contenders for the services of the star midfielder.
