  • European leagues are drawing to a close and spots for next season’s competition are confirmed
  • The Champions League final will not see a new spot as Man City and Inter Milan end in the top four
  • Roma or Sevilla could make it if they win Europa League as they are outside the top four of their leagues

The 2023/24 UEFA Champions League will miss some big names across the top European leagues, as all competitions draw to a close in the coming weeks.

The 2023 edition is yet to be concluded as the final is scheduled for the Ataturk Olympic Stadium in Istanbul, Turkey, between Manchester City and Inter Milan on June 10.

Real Sociedad and Newcastle United will make their return after a long absence, while Union Berlin will be represented for the first time in their history.

After missing out on qualification places, Sports Brief looks at the top clubs that will not participate in next season’s edition

1. Chelsea

This is the most disappointing of them all. According to ESPN, Todd Boehly splashed over £600 million on transfers and had four managers oversee at least a game, yet the team settled for an embarrassing 12th place.

The two-time winners, who last won as recently as 2021, will not even have a place in the second tier of competitions - the Europa League and the Conference League.

2. Liverpool

The Reds battled hard until the penultimate game of the season, when Manchester United beat Chelsea 4-1 to end their rivals’ hopes. An early season dip in form proved costly to Liverpool, who will play in the Europa League next season.

3. Juventus

According to BBC Sports, the Old Lady were docked 10 points for capital gains fraud, which means they will finish with a maximum of 62 points and miss out on the prestigious competition.

As reported by Football Italia, if Juventus had made it, UEFA president Aleksandr Ceferin was determined to expel them for their involvement and insistence on the European Super League.

4. Ajax

The Dutch giants will miss out after finishing 3rd in the Eredivisie. Erik ten Hag’s departure affected the team, who had two managers - Alfred Schreuder and Johnny Heitinga - yet fell short of the bare minimum.

5. Lille

The 2020/21 Ligue 1 champions will take a step away from the UCL. They are 4th on the French league log with a point over 5th-placed Rennes, while their fate of a second European competition is still undecided.

6. AS Monaco

The 2016/17 French champions, and the second team other than Paris Saint-Germain to win the title, will not be at next year’s competition. They were beaten finalists by Jose Mourinho’s Porto in 2004.

7. Bayer Leverkusen

Bayer Leverkusen were in the Champions League this season, dropped to the Europa League, and will not play either next season. They will compete in the Conference League after finishing 6th with a massive nine-point gap behind fifth-placed Freiburg.

8. Sporting CP

Sporting Lisbon share a similar story to Bayer Leverkusen. They were dropped into the Europa League and reached the quarter-final before Juventus eliminated them. They will start the secondary competition from the group stage next season.

Juve to lose UCL money

Sports Brief reported Juventus will lose substantial financial rewards for missing out on the UEFA Champions League next season after they were docked 10 points.

The Bianconeri were initially deducted 15 points in February, but this was restored and just as it looked like they would secure UCL football, the reduction was reinstated.
