West African nation, Gambia created an upset at the ongoing FIFA U-20 World Cup, following a 2-1 win over tournament favourites, France.
The Gambian side is the second African team to advance to the next round of the competition after the Flying Eagles of Nigeria.
Against all odds, the Young Scorpions proved their mettle, outplaying their French counterparts and maintaining their 100 percent run at the tournament.
The Gambians continued to pile the pressure on in the early stages, and their efforts paid off in the 13th minute when defender, Tanguy Zoukrou deflected Adama Bodjang’s shot into his own net, ESPN reports.
In the second half, the African team had the chance to extend their lead after Jobe was brought down in the French danger area, costing his side a penalty.
Gambia’s captain, Alagie Saine was denied by French goalkeeper, Yann Lienard after attempting to redeem himself.
The missed penalty proved to be a regretful moment for the Young Scorpions, as France equalised four minutes later through a strike from Wilson Odobert.
Mamin Sanyang restored Gambia’s lead in the 68th minute after he maneuvered past the French defence before unleashing a powerful shot that beat Lienard.
France mounted intense pressure to get back into the game, but the Africans were resolute and managed to escape with the precious win. It ended Gambia 2-1 France.
