  • The 2022-23 footballing season is fast approaching its culminating period
  • Players have impressed with their astounding numbers during this season
  • Sports Brief has listed the players with the most goal contributions so far

Some well-known names are among the players with the most goals and assists in European football this season, from the old guard to the upcoming stars of the next generation.

The most lethal players in Europe are superstars from Paris Saint-Germain, Liverpool, Real Madrid, and Manchester City, both in terms of scoring and setting up opportunities.

Sports Brief takes a look at the five players who have contributed the most goals and assists across all competitions in the current 2022-23 season in Europe’s top five leagues.

5. Lionel Messi: 20 goals, 20 assists

Despite a disappointing season, Paris Saint-Germain will likely retain the Ligue 1 championship, largely thanks to Lionel Messi's return to form.

By his own high standards, the Argentinian icon's maiden season in Paris was subpar, but he appeared inspired in 2022–2023.

The 35-year-old has 15 goals and 16 assists in the French top tier between his heroics in Qatar, and is the only player with 20 goals and 20 assists across all competitions this season, Planet Football reported.

4. Vinicius Junior: 23 goals, 21 assists

The Brazilian forward's meteoric rise hasn't stopped.

Vinicius Junior keeps becoming better and better, having scored the game-winning goal in the Champions League final from the previous season.

With 44 goals scored this season for Real Madrid in all competitions, the 22-year-old has already set a career-high, per Sport Bible.

3. Mohamed Salah: 30 goals, 15 assists

The 2022–23 Liverpool season did not proceed as planned.

Jurgen Klopp's Reds finished the 2022–23 season without any silverware, and their hopes of making the Champions League ended following Manchester United's 4-1 win over Chelsea at Old Trafford on Thursday night.

Some saw Mohamed Salah's decline in form as a contributing factor, asserting that Liverpool's Egyptian King hasn't quite been himself since the Africa Cup Of Nations last year.

Since then, the 30-year-old has resoundingly disproved the skeptics by producing exceptional stats, which are arguably even more impressive given the team's overall under-performance.

2. Kylian Mbappe: 40 goals, 9 assists

Apart from Messi, Kylian Mbappe has also excelled in the current PSG side this season. Only Erling Haaland and Harry Kane have more goals in Europe's top leagues than the French captain, who has scored 28 goals in Ligue 1 for Les Parisiens.

This season, he has 51 goals in all competitions for both club and country - just two short of the all-time milestone established by Just Fontaine, a legend of Les Bleus, in the 1957/1958 term.

1. Erling Haaland: 52 goals, 9 assists

The Norwegian striker's spectacular performance for treble-chasing Manchester City has completely eclipsed everyone else in Europe.

His 12 goals in the Champions League have all but guaranteed his position as the competition's leading scorer, while his record-breaking 36 Premier League goals meaning a first European Golden Shoe is already in the bag.

Haaland has already had one of the greatest individual seasons in football history for the Citizens, but if he can help them win the FA Cup and Champions League finals, he will solidify his place in football history.
