Man City 1-2 Manchester United: Rashford , Martial hurl Guardiola out of title race with in emphatic derby

- United were largely the better side in the Manchester Derby on Saturday, December 7

- Rashford scored another penalty while Anthony Martial sneaked a shot past Ederson in the first half to make it 2-0

- Otamendi scored from a corner late on but could not stop Guardiola from succumbing to another defeat

Manchester City’s title defence was dealt a massive blow courtesy of their bitter city rivals as Guardiola’s boys succumbed to a shock 2-1 loss to Manchester United.

Rivalries were renewed on Saturday, December 7 as the two Manchester clubs faced off once again and it was Ole Gunnar Solskjaer who came out with an impressive win at the Etihad.

Both sides started the game fairly well, with City eager to dominate proceedings while United were happy to sit back and hit the hosts on the counter.

And it was United’s tactic which paid dividend first as another swift counter attack saw the Reds’ talisman Marcus Rashford impeded by Bernardo Silva and a penalty was awarded.

Rashford calmly slotted the penalty home in the 23rd minute even as City players continued to cry foul over the controversial decision.

City chased an equalizer and despite their dominance, they seemed to be lacking the cutting edge which has for years been provided by their all-time goalscorer Sergio Aguero.

It was United who got the second goal of the game, this time another swift counter saw David James exchange passes with Anthony Martial who beat Ederson in his near post.

The hosts felt aggrieved late in the first half as the controversy of the Video Assisted Referee (VAR) played out once again as a Kyle Walker whip-in hit Fred on the hand, only or the referee to award a corner rather than a penalty.

City still struggled to break down a resolute United side in the second half although they handed themselves a lifeline as a Nicolas Otamendi header from Riyad Mahrez’s corner made the scores 2-1 with eight minutes to go.

United held on for a famous derby win which all but ended Manchester City’s title defence.

Following Liverpool’s earlier 3-0 win away at Bournemouth, it means Guardiola is 14 points behind the runaway leaders, with second placed Leicester City in better position to catch Klopp’s men.

For United, the win lifts them to fifth on the log, only five points behind Chelsea in fourth who were earlier beaten by Everton.
