FC Barcelona were crowned champions of Spain for the 27th time in their history on Saturday, May 20, despite suffering their first home loss of the season.
The Catalans were confirmed as La Liga victors after beating cross-town rivals Espanyol 4-2 with four games to spare, boasting 14 unassailable points ahead of archrivals and second-placed Real Madrid, who face Valencia on Sunday.
With the league title in the bag and facing Real Sociedad in their coronation game, a strike from Mikel Merino and Alexander Sorloth on either side of halftime handed Barca a 2-1 defeat on a day when they were celebrating their league triumph, BBC reports.
The narrow loss did not dampen the festive atmosphere at Spotify Camp Nou. Long-serving player and team captain Sergio Busquets, who will be leaving La Blaugrana this summer, received the glittering trophy before presenting it to the crowd alongside his teammates.
According to Eurosport, it was the first league crown for Barca since the departure of seven-time Ballon d'Or winner Lionel Messi due to the club's ailing financial situation two years ago.
Regardless, the teeming fans gathered at the over 90,000-capacity stadium clamoured for their "son", who is set to leave PSG this summer.
