  • This was Ancelotti's 191st match as a coach in the tournament, surpassing a previous record of 190 matches held by Fergie

Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti has broken a longstanding Champions League record previously held by Sir Alex Ferguson.

Ancelotti broke the record when he led Real Madrid to a 4-0 mauling by Man City in the second leg of their Champions League semi-final tie on Wednesday night.

According to Sky Sports, Bernardo Silva was the man of the moment during the epic clash staged at the Etihad Stadium.

The Portuguese midfielder scored a first-half brace to hand City the advantage in the tie, with goals from Akanji and Julian Alvarez in the second-half sealing a momentous win for Pep Guardiola's men.

Ancelotti breaks Fergie's record

Despite Real's heavy defeat, it was not all gloom for Ancelotti, who inked his name in the history books of the Champions League after the clash.

According to The Mirror, this was the Italian's 191st match he has coached in the competition, thus surpassing Ferguson's 190 fixtures he was in charge of.

Incredibly, this is the second record Ancelotti has snapped from Fergie, having usurped the Scottishman's 102 wins in the tournament earlier on in the season.

Meanwhile, Fergie won the Champions League on two occasions with Manchester United during his glittering managerial career at Old Trafford.

On his part, Ancelotti has lifted the prestigious trophy four times - twice with Real Madrid and twice with AC Milan.

Ancelotti decides his Real Madrid future

Earlier, Sports Brief reported Real Madrid manager, Carlo Ancelotti, has reiterated his desire to continue as the club's coach despite Wednesday night’s rout at the hands of Manchester City.

When asked about his future, Ancelotti was similarly upbeat, and he fully anticipates sitting on the bench for Real Madrid in the upcoming campaign.

“Next season, I will be here to fight to win another Champions League. No one doubts me. I think the president was very clear 15 days ago. What he tells me in private, I’m not going to say here.”
