Manchester City go up against Real Madrid in the Champions League semi-finals, knowing they’ll have to do better than last season's clash to reach the finals.

Pep Guardiola's side were eliminated by Los Blancos 6-5 on aggregate after extra time at this stage last year, courtesy of a historic comeback from the Spanish giants.

As reported by BBC, the Citizens were leading 1-0 in the second leg and 5-3 on aggregate heading into the 90th minute before two goals from substitute Rodrygo restored parity for Real Madrid in dramatic fashion, and Karim Benzema then netted a match-winning extra-time penalty to send the Citizens packing.

Carlo Ancelotti's side have continued their impressive home record when it comes to playing the English clubs at Santiago Bernabeu this season.

The Spanish giants have already eliminated Liverpool and Chelsea in the Champions League this term after knocking out Chelsea, Man City and beating Liverpool in the final in Paris.

It’s not the best record for the Premier League clubs against the White Angels, but which English teams recorded wins on Madrid's home turf?

Sports Brief takes a look at the English clubs who have had success against Real Madrid at the Bernabeu.

Real Madrid 0-1 Arsenal (Champions League, 2006)

Goalscorer Thierry Henry aside, this Arsenal side do not look like a team of heroes. And is anybody else astonished that Abou Diaby ever played in the same team as Henry and Freddie Ljungberg?

Anyway, the north Londoners visited the Bernabéu in the first leg of their last 16 tie against Los Blancos, BBC reported.

Even though the Galácticos period was coming to an end, Real still had a roster full of elite players like Ronaldo, Zinedine Zidane and David Beckham.

In a thrilling first leg, despite Mathieu Flamini starting at left-back alongside Philippe Senderos, Arsenal tore up the record books and dominated their opponents for long stretches.

Just after halftime, Henry took the game by the scruff of the neck and created the miraculous play that would win the tie.

Arsenal even stood firm to draw the second leg 0-0 and advance through to the Champions League semi-finals.

Real Madrid 0 - 1 Liverpool (Champions League, 2009)

The kind of textbook away performance in the Champions League that leaves Jamie Carragher admitting that he has played in Liverpool sides that have a mindset as defensive as Jose Mourinho’s Manchester United.

Rafa Benitez set up Liverpool to contain Real Madrid and they did it brilliantly, with long balls out of defence towards Fernando Torres, their only forward.

The perfect performance was then capped by the bonus away goal, scored with the head of Yossi Benayoun from a Fabio Aurelio free-kick.

The Reds would then thrash them 4-0 at Anfield with a very different kind of thrilling performance, showing just what great managers can achieve in knock-out competitions.

Real Madrid 1-2 Manchester City (Champions League, 2020)

Pe Guardiola's City wrote a new history to become the first English club in 11 years to beat Real Madrid at Santiago Bernabeu in February 2020.

The Sky Blues produced a stunning late fightback to secure a memorable 2-1 win at Real Madrid to take control of their Champions League last-16 tie.

Los Blancos capitalised on a defensive mix-up between Rodri and Nicolas Otamendi to take the lead as the impressive Vinicius Junior raced towards goal before neatly squaring for Isco to slot home.

City equalised 12 minutes before time when Gabriel Jesus nodded in from close range before De Bruyne stepped home to confidently convert from the spot to hand victory to the Premier League side.

Real Madrid 2 - 3 Chelsea (Champions League 2022)

Chelsea's reign as European champions came to an agonising end despite beating Real Madrid on a night of high drama at the Bernabeu Stadium.

Mason Mount's strike and Antonio Rudiger's header wiped out Real Madrid's 3-1 first-leg advantage and brought the quarter-final tie level in Spain's capital.

Timo Werner's clever finish from an angle put the Blues ahead for the first time on aggregate and within sight of a place in the semi-finals.

But substitute Rodrygo forced extra time with a volleyed finish before Karim Benzema headed the decisive goal in the 96th minute to send Real through 5-4 on aggregate.
