Brazilian football icon Pele's tomb was opened up to the public earlier in the week.

The opening came months after curtains fell on Pele at the age of 82 back in December after a battle with cancer.

Pele's death plunged the world of football into mourning, with millions of fans across the world mourning the legendary player.

According to The Sun, the former Brazil international was accorded a befitting funeral which saw his coffin placed at the centre of Santos' pitch, his boyhood club.

On Monday, May 15, his mausoleum was opened up to the public, with adoring fans allowed to continue paying their tributes.

It is understood that the mausoleum is on the second floor of the Ecumenical Memorial Cemetery, which is the world's tallest cemetery.

Inside Pele's tomb

The Sun reports that Pele's tomb features incredible characteristics, including two life-size golden statues of Pele at the door, which welcome the fans.

The two statues are compassed of the flags of Brazil and Santos, with artificial grass placed on the floor.

Photos of the tomb, which have since surfaced online, show the walls plastered with images of fans in a stadium, with the ceiling complemented with a sky blue colouration.

Pele's golden vault has been placed in the centre of the 200-square-metre space.

The vault features a cross at the top and has black etchings believed to be a representation of the icon's 1000th goal and famous raised-fist celebration.

A fan who paid the mausoleum a visit told AFP:

"It surpassed my expectations. It's a really beautiful place."

Pele's career by numbers

Pele is widely acclaimed as one of the greatest footballers in the world for a reason.

The late former footballer racked up stunning numbers during his illustrious career, which spanned for years.

According to FIFA's official website, Pele scored 1,281 goals in 1,363 games.

Most of Pele's goals were scored for Santos, where he spent the majority of his playing career at the club level.

The prolific forward scored an eyewatering 643 goals for Brazil giants in more than 650 competitive appearances.

Meanwhile, the football icon bagged 77 goals for Brazil in 92 appearances.

The tally has him as the joint-top goalscorer of all time for the South American country, alongside Paris Saint-Germain superstar Neymar, who equalled the record at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Neymar and Mbappe salute Pele

Sports Brief earlier reported that Neymar and Mbappe paid tribute to legend Pele, who passed away on Thursday night surrounded by his family.

Neymar is tied on 77 goals with Pele as Brazil's international top scorer, praising his influence on the number 10 and his transformation of football in an emotional tribute on social media.

Mbappe, who broke some of Pele's World Cup records and has been soliciting prayers for him, addressed him as the king and acknowledged that his legacy would live forever.
