Mamelodi Sundowns are celebrating their sixth-successive league title after another impressive season.
The Brazilians wrapped up the DStv Premiership title in April with seven games to spare but had to wait for their final game of the season before they could collect the trophy. The champions were held to a 1-1 draw against Maritzburg United in their final game, but that didn’t stop their celebrations.
Sundowns not only will keep the trophy, as they have won the league three years in a row since it is called the DStv Premiership, but also won the R15 million prize money that goes with it.
The league success is also Sundowns’ 16th title overall, four more than Kaizer Chiefs. Coach Rhulani Mokwena even described it as the most important trophy in the country.
Collecting the trophy was also a bittersweet moment for all associated with the club, as their trophy presentation coincided with the funeral of Alex ‘Goldfingers’ Shakoane. Shakoane was a long-standing club official and an iconic face in South African football.
The champions will now turn their attention to the CAF Champions League. Sundowns will host Wydad Casablanca in the second leg of their semi-final clash. The first leg finished 0-0, with Sundowns ending the game with nine men.
The Brazilian's one and only success in the continental competition came in 2016 when they defeated Zamalek in the two-legged final to win the trophy.
