  • The battle to avoid relegation in the DStv Premiership will go down to the final game this season
  • Richards Bay need just a win or a draw in order to secure their status in South Africa's top flight
  • Marumo Gallants, Maritzburg United, and Chippa United all face the drop, with one game to play

The race for the DStv Premiership title may be over, but the relegation battle is still one to watch.

With one game to go in the season, four sides still face the drop.

Three teams at the bottom of the table are tied on 29 points, separated by goal difference, while the fourth is only three points ahead.

Sports Brief looks at the four teams that can be relegated, and what they need to do to avoid the drop.

Maritzburg United:

Maritzburg United are currently in the automatic relegation zone with 29 points, and face the most formidable challenge among all the relegation-threatened teams.

The Team of Choice will have to take on the champions, Mamelodi Sundowns, with the game taking place before any of the other sides contest their final fixture. The game will be earlier due to Sundowns’ CAF Champions League participation.

The scheduling of the fixture has not sat well with the club’s chairman, Farouk Kadodia, who accused the PSL of unfair practices, News24 reported. The Team of Choice must beat Sundowns to guarantee their safety and hope other results go their way on the final day.

Chippa United:

Also on 29 points, Chippa are above Maritzburg United, but only on goal difference. The Chilli Boys could have secured safety last week, but were thrashed by TS Galaxy.

Chippa are currently in the relegation/playoff spot, and will not automatically be relegated if they finish there this season. However, they can avoid being dragged into the playoff games by beating or drawing with Golden Arrows in the final match, provided that Maritzburg United and Marumo Gallants both lose.

Marumo Gallants:

Gallants are in the best position of the three teams, with 29 points.

As noted by SuperSport, they are in 14th spot and in the first safety zone. They also have a goal difference advantage of 10 over Chippa, and 11 over Maritzburg United.

Gallants play Swallows in their final game, and only need to match whatever Chippa and Maritzburg do.

Richards Bay:

Richards Bay started the season on a high note, but are ending the season just above the relegation zone.

Natal Rich Boys are in 13th spot on 32 points, and need to draw to guarantee their safety. The KwaZulu-Natal side will take on Royal AM in their final game of the season, and need to avoid a heavy defeat.

They would need to hope for big wins for Chippa and Maritzburg if they can’t win or draw.

Mamelodi Sundowns break league records

Sports Brief has previously reported that no team had ever won the DStv Premiership in April before.

No team had sealed the title with seven matches left in a league campaign either before the Brazilians.

However, Mamelodi Sundowns now hold these records following their sixth consecutive Premier Soccer League triumph and record-extending 13th overall.
