FootballDisappointed Neil Tovey Opens Up on Kaizer Chiefs Fans Attacking Arthur Zwane
- Former Kaizer Chiefs defender Neil Tovey has weighed in on the problems at Kaizer Chiefs
- AmaKhosi supporters recently attacked coach Arthur Zwane after the team's latest loss
- Tovey then questioned whether Chiefs' players knew what a big club they were playing for
Neil Tovey is disappointed with the actions of Kaizer Chiefs' supporters but also understands their frustration.
The former AmaKhosi captain has weighed in on the aftermath of Chiefs' latest defeat, as angry fans turned on coach, Arthur Zwane.
Fans pelted Zwane with objects as he left the field, with one item striking him in the face.
Tovey, who played 364 games for the Soweto-based side, said that he disagreed with the supporters' actions but understood why frustrations boiled over, KickOff reported.
“What happened to Arthur was obviously disappointing, and I’m not condoning the bad behaviour at all, but the Chiefs fans have been frustrated for a long time,” Tovey said.
“The club’s slogan is ‘Love and Peace’, but the fans are fed up, and the club needs to address the situation," he added.
The AmaKhosi have gone another year without winning any silverware and failed to qualify for continental competition again.
It has been eight years since the Naturena-based club picked up any trophies, despite being considered one of South Africa's biggest clubs.
As noted by Times LIVE, the former Chiefs man questioned whether any of the team's current players understood how big the club is.
“I don’t know if the current players realise how big the club has been because certainly, in their era, they haven’t won anything. In the past, Chiefs would have had six or seven players in the national squad, and how many do they have now?” he queried.
Tovey, the club's second most-capped player, believes the AmaKhosi also need to bring in a technical director to deal with player recruitment, believing that a shake-up is required at his former side.
