- Here we dissect three matches that saw Arsenal blow away the title which has eluded the club for almost two decades
Not until the final lap, Arsenal looked good to win the English Premier League, but the Gunners seem to have conceded the title to Manchester City.
One more win for Pep Guardiola’s side will confirm them as champions of the 2022/2023 Premier League season.
Arsenal were five points clear as of Christmas 2022, and many had tipped them to go all the way to win the title again after about two decades.
They maintained the five-point gap over second-placed Manchester City in February after the clubs had played 25 games, but somehow the Gunners began to drop crucial points.
Liverpool 2-2 Arsenal
After going two goals up as early as the 28th minute, Mikel Arteta’s side failed to leave Anfield with all three precious points. That match, in fact, was their undoing.
Mohamed Salah pulled one back for the hosts just before half-time, and then it was not until three minutes before regulation time that Roberto Firmino struck to deny the Gunners a massive away win. Arteta said via Football.London:
“When you concede at the end it’s always two points dropped. Super intense match. We started very well, scored the first and the second and that was the moment to kill the game.
“Before half time we gave them hope and they generated belief. The second half was a very different story. We gave every ball away in dangerous areas and allowed dangerous results and big transition moments. Then you have to suffer.”

FootballIn a repeat of what transpired at Anfield, the Gunners blew away a two-goal lead against the Hammers. They attempted to make up for their draw with Liverpool and were two goals ahead as early as the 10th minute.
But the Hammers pulled off a stunt, with Said Benrahma scoring from the penalty spot in the 33rd minute.
Again Arsenal failed to learn their lessons as they continued to attack, only to be haunted by Jarrod Bowen in the 54th minute. Two points dropped again.
Arsenal 3-3 Southampton
What a shambolic performance by the Gunners at home against bottom team Southampton. The hosts were lucky to have gotten a draw during the encounter.
The first goal for the visitors came just seconds into the game, and then ex-Gunner Theo Walcott made it two in the 14th minute. Gabriel Martinelli pulled one back six minutes later to make it 2-1.
The Saints were not done yet; Duje Caleta-Car extended the visitors' lead to make 3-1, and Arsenal had to get two late goals to share the spoils as it ended 3-3. More points dropped, and City overtook.

FootballArteta accepts blames
Sports Brief earlier reported that Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has appeared to blame himself after the Gunners seemingly surrendered the Premier League title to Manchester City on Sunday.
The north Londoners looked on course to secure this season's EPL crown after an incredible run of form and result under Arteta.
The Emirates Stadium dwellers had been topping the standings for the better part of the campaign and had an eight-point advantage over City at some point.
