  • Kaizer Chiefs will have to wait until the start of next season at the very least to end their continuous trophy drought
  • The Amakhosi were defeated 2-1 by Orlando Pirates in a dramatic Nedbank Cup semifinal on Saturday at Soccer City in Johannesburg
  • In the aftermath of yet another disaster for the club, a video has emerged involving legendary broadcaster Robert Marawa, brutally contextualising Chiefs’ continuing slide into mediocrity and irrelevance

09 May 2015.

That was the last time Kaizer Chiefs lifted a trophy. To be exact, that is 2 920 days ago as of 07 May 2023. Ninety-six months. Seventy thousand and eighty hours. Seven years and 363 days to the day the Amakhosi - the cup kings of South African football - added silverware to their now-empty cabinet of trophies.

On Saturday, their arch-rivals Orlando Pirates ensured that at the very least, they would have to wait until the 2023 MTN 8 Wafa Wafa competition to try and at least correct this disturbing. Pirates defeated Chiefs 2-1 in the first semifinal of the 2023 Nedbank Cup at a packed Soccer City on Saturday afternoon, ensuring that the trophy drought continued at Naturena.

Amid the debris of another disastrous season for the Phefeni Glamour Boys, a video from years past re-emerged on social media contextualising the club’s fall from grace. It was of former SuperSport anchor Robert Marawa speaking during Chiefs’ 4-2 victory over Chippa United on 20 April 2019.

During half-time, Marawa dialled up the theatrics at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in then-Port Elizabeth - now Gqeberha - to 11 about the significance of the match as Chiefs was approaching four years without a trophy, saying:

“… for Kaizer Chiefs, it’s been four years with no trophy and they know that they need to make changes and make them fast in that second half if they are to maintain this lead… or else their history as far as trophies is concerned will go down in the dustbin of history.”

“Madluputhu” then dropped the mic into the rubbish bin that was behind one of the benches. Several weeks later, Chiefs was humiliated by TS Galaxy 1-0 in the final at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban.

Video comes back to haunt Chiefs

The saying goes that be careful what you wish for.

Several weeks ago, Sports Brief reported on how Chiefs players were celebrating being drawn against Pirates in South Africa’s FA Cup. Who could blame them for they had a five-match winning streak against their mortal enemy, and had just come off a rousing victory in the quarterfinal against Royal AM.

This has come back to bite them hard.
