  • Mason Greenwood has reportedly made up his mind about his professional future
  • Greenwood was suspended in January last year after court proceedings were opened against him
  • His potential return puts Manchester United in a delicate spot

Embattled Manchester United striker Mason Greenwood has reportedly informed his friends that he won't play for the club again.

Greenwood, who hasn't played for over 15 months after he was suspended, was hopeful of a quick return once his charges were dropped.

The 21-year-old was arrested last year and subsequently arraigned after he was accused of coercive behaviour and sexual assault. His case was dropped in February this year by the Crown Prosecution Services.

Manchetser United released a statement indicating that they intended to carry out their own internal investigations before providing a way forward.

However, as the Sun now reports, Greenwood has seemingly given up on representing the club again. The teenage star is said to have informed his friends of his decision even as he awaits the club's verdict.

A source close to the Sun said:

"He wants to get back to playing football but realises his situation is very complicated and it’s his own doing. He is determined to play football again but doesn’t think he’ll ever pull on a United shirt ever again."

There have been reports that Greenwood's potential return has caused issues within the United camp, with the Women's team particularly opposed to the move.

His contract runs until 2025.

Possible options for Greenwood

Sports Brief has previously reported that Greenwood could soon be provided with a way back to professional football after it emerged that AC Milan are interested in signing him this summer.

Greenwood has not played a single minute of football for over a year now after he was suspended by Manchester United following the sexual assault claims levelled against him.

A chance to move abroad could offer him an opportunity to revitalise his career. AC Milan will be in the market for new strikers, with the likes of Olivier Giroud and Zlatan Ibrahimovic approaching the end of their careers. Divock Origi is yet to impress fully.
