Ronwen Williams has been near-unbeatable as Mamelodi Sundowns' goalkeeper in his first season with the club.

He joined the Brazilians from cross-town rivals, SuperSport United, contributing immensely to Sundowns' dominant run to a sixth DStv Premiership title on the bounce.

The Bafana Bafana captain has reached a historic landmark in the process.

As per Far Post, Williams drew level with former Orlando Pirates shot-stopper, Moeneeb Josephs as the keepers with the most clean sheets in a single season.

The Buccaneers' legend held the record alone after keeping 17 clean sheets in the 2009/2010 campaign, as per iDiski Times, but his feat has now been equalledWilliams has now equalled the feat.

31-year-old Williams reached the record after his side’s 1-0 win over Premiership rookies, Richards Bay on Tuesday afternoon at Loftus Versfeld.

Williams could better Premiership record

Williams will be out to set a new record when Sundowns are next in action in the Premiership. They face AmaZulu at the Princess Magogo Stadium on May 3.

He has three more matches to try and break the record, with Sundowns set to face Marumo Gallants and Maritzburg United before the campaign ends.

Williams has been so impressive for the Brazilians that he had kept veteran shot-stoppers, Denis Onyango and Kennedy Mweene out of the team.

He has made 32 appearances for Rulani Mokwena’s side this season in all competitions, keeping 19 clean sheets in the process.

Sundowns breaks records in defence

It was very clear from the start of the campaign that Mamelodi Sundowns were going to win their 13th DStv Premiership title, Sports Brief reported.

What everyone was more interested in was how soon the Brazilians would a their sixth consecutive win, with their latest feat being breaking two records. They have now broken two unique records in the process of dominating South African football.
