  • Controversy has surrounded the officiating of Kaizer Chiefs matches during the 2022/2023 Premier Soccer League season
  • Rival supporters and neutrals have complained - without compelling evidence - that referees have been favouring the Amakhosi
  • These unfounded allegations come on the back of the historic amount of red cards that have been shown to the Chiefs' opponents

Since the start of the Premier Soccer League in 1996, no team has had as many of its opponents sent off in a season as Kaizer Chiefs in the current campaign.

No less than nine players have been red-carded while trying to keep the Amakhosi at bay.

This has led to whispers and shouting about the merit of these dismissals, with many accusing referees of being biased in Kaizer Chiefs' favour.

Sports Brief has compiled a list of the players who were sent off, analysing the circumstances that led to their early trips to the showers.

Ismael Toure, Marumo Gallants - DStv Premiership, September 11, 2022

Toure recklessly caught Ashley du Preez with high studs, which warranted a straight red card on its own. He was already on a yellow card and a second one from the referee sealed his fate.

Veluyeke Zulu, AmaZulu - MTN8, October 2, 2022

Zulu had it in for Kgaugelo Sekgota that afternoon, elbowing him twice, with one of the offences worthy of a red card. Like Toure, he was shown two yellow cards before the eventual red.

Rafique De Goede, Stellenbosch FC - DStv Premiership, October 9, 2022

De Goede committed as blatant a professional foul on Caleb Bimenyimana as is possible when he was through on goal with just the keeper to beat, suffering the double pain of a red card and penalty that was converted by Bimenyimana.

Siyabonga Khumalo, Golden Arrows - December 31, 2022

Khumalo needlessly earned himself a second yellow card after dragging the troublesome Sekgota back with his jersey, which was as inarguable as can be.

Marks Munyai, TS Galaxy - February 5, 2023

Munyai nearly broke Bimenyimana's leg with a reckless challenge, whether he intended to or not. Because it was a display of excessive force, his red card was well-earned.

Travis Graham, Maritzburg United - February 10, 2023

Graham sent Shabalala flying with a clumsily stuck-out leg, which shocked the crowd as it looked like the latter was badly hurt. Luckily he wasn't, while the offender received a second yellow card for his marching orders, though the foul alone warranted a red on its own.

Innocent Maela, Orlando Pirates - February 25, 2023

Like De Goede's professional foul earlier, Maela cynically brought down Christian Saile as he was about to break through clean on goal, with the referee having no choice but to send him packing.

Salim Magoola, Richards Bay FC - March 4, 2023

Magool naughtily and deliberately handled the ball outside the box after its wicked bounce defeated him, earning one of the wackiest red cards on this list.

Sage Stephens, Stellenbosch FC - April 1, 2022

Stephens made an April fool out of himself with the same crime that Magoola committed. Keagan Dolly outfoxed the goalkeeper as he chipped the ball around him, leading to Stephens desperately handling it rather than conceding.

Barker furious with red cards

Stellenbosch FC coach, Steve Barker nearly lost his mind with anger following Stephen's red card, stating teams must train with 10 men when facing Chiefs.

However, as reported by Sports Brief, respected former referee, Ace 'VAR' Ncobo used his common sense and knowledge of the laws to argue against him.
