  • Harry Maguire was once again at the centre of attention as Manchester United lost to Sevilla
  • Maguire and David de Gea were responsible for the three goals Erik ten Hag's side conceded
  • Anthony Martial's injury has now been added to a growing list of Maguire's recent misdoings

It would be fair to say that Harry Maguire has never had the best of times in a Manchester United shirt.

The decision by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to buy him from Leicester City, for a fee of 80 million Euros, elicited sharp reactions but was allowed to pass given the way the football market is inflated nowadays.

But when Maguire was installed as captain, it got fans talking and that talking has never really stopped, except most of the discussion has turned to stinging criticism.

That his defensive errors and lapses have been so rampant hasn't helped his case. Rarely does the England international last a 90-minute game without being involved in a controversial moment.

Be it an own goal, giving away cheap possession or poor marking, Maguire has always found a way of making headlines. He has even been accused of marking his own players during opponents' set pieces.

As far as the banter goes, the Englishman has found himself being accused of injuring Anthony Martial on April 20, during Manchester United's Europa League game against Sevilla.

For starters, he had already provided a characteristic Maguire performance after he combined with David de Gea to gift Sevilla their opening goal.

The whole Manchester United squad was at fault for the second goal squad by Loic Bade, but the ex-Leicester man's actions once again came to the fore.

As Ivan Rakitic swung in the corner just after half-time, Maguire was seen pushing Marcel Sabitzer, who in turn fell onto Martial.

The striker remained on the turf as Sevilla wheeled away in celebrations. He attempted to shake off his injury but unfortunately, he had to be withdrawn, with Wout Weghorst taking his place.

The damage inflicted on Martial by the incident remains to be seen, but the Frenchman has been pretty unlucky with being sidelined this term. Maguire's innocuous shove has brought about a whole debate online.

Maguire's fight with de Gea

It was a difficult night for the captain, who he had an altercation with his goalkeeper as United bowed out of the Europa League. The Red Devils were taken apart in Spain as Sevilla maintained a charge for a record title.

Sports Brief previously reported that after the first goal went in, fans believe Maguire told de Gea to shut up with a gesture. The veteran keeper was visibly upset that his skipper couldn't keep possession of the ball.

Maguire's time at Manchester has always been punctuated with high-profile errors. However, he is set to have a lengthy run in the team with Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane currently sidelined with injuries.
