  • Dayot Upamecano would want to forget the UCL quarter-final tie against Manchester City
  • The Bayern Munich defender's errors cost his side over two legs as the Bavarians fell out
  • Upamecano was compared to Harry Maguire, who has been at the centre of criticism lately

A football commentator savagely compared Bayern Munich defender, Dayot Upamecano to Manchester United's embattled captain, Harry Maguire on April 19.

This happened during the second leg of the UEFA Champions League quarter-final between Bayern and Manchester City at the Allianz Arena.

Upamecano put on a terrible performance as the Bavarian giants exited the competition in the last eight for the third season in a row.

Erling Haaland atoned for his penalty miss in the first half by opening the score, with Joshua Kimmich restoring parity from the spot with less than eight minutes to play.

The aggregate score was ultimately 4-1 as Man City went on to set up a semi-final date with Real Madrid - a repeat of last year's clash.

Upamecano's errors vs Manchester City

Just like in Manchester last week, where he was culpable for two goals, Upamecano was once again off the pace in front of his home fans.

He was lucky to escape a straight red card after he hauled down Haaland in a last-man tackle. The referee rescinded his decision after VAR images showed the Norwegian hitman had started in an offside position.

Minutes later, Upamecano was penalised for handling the ball inside the penalty area and was booked for the offence. Haaland blasted his effort over the goalpost to spare the French defender's blushes.

However, the striker would get his revenge later in the game when he sat down Upamecano before firing past Yan Sommer, to score his 48th goal of the campaign in all competitions.

A commentator compared Upamecano's performance to those of Harry Maguire, calling him 'Upamaguire', as GMS reports. The Man City defender has always been on the receiving end of criticism ever since he made the big-money switch from Leicester City.

Maguire has often been culpable for making poor decisions, with several comical clips online on his defending. Upamecano will be hoping to find his feet quickly as Bayern now focus on retaining the Bundesliga title.

Haaland misses City's penalty

Sports Brief also reported on Pep Guardiol's charges being awarded a spot kick with 38 minutes on the clock when Upamecano apparently deflected a shot with his arm

Ilkay Gundogan whipped a shot into Bayern Munich's box, striking the Frenchman's elbow and referee, Clement Turpin did not hesitate in pointing to the penalty spot.

Haaland, who leads this season's Champions League chart of the top scorers, went straight down the middle but skied the resulting penalty attempt over the crossbar.
