There have been sad news coming out of KwaZulu-Natal.

Former AmaZulu player Mduduzi Nxele was found dead in his home on Tuesday.

According to the North Coast Rising Sun, the 41-year-old Nxele was found hanging in a bedroom inside his Westham home. Suspiciously, his hands and feet were bound, strongly suggesting that he had been murdered. No suicide note was found on the scene.

Phoenix police communications officer Louise Naidoo said to the publication:

“The deceased, 41-year-old Mduduzi Nxele was found hanged in his room. His nephew, Asanda Nxele stated that he last saw his uncle the previous day. He also said that he noticed that the door of the deceased’s outbuilding was slightly opened and jammed with a mat. Upon opening the door by force, he found the man hanging from the ceiling.
“The nephew found his uncle’s hands tied to the front with a cord while his feet were tied with a shoelace. There was no suicide note at the scene nor did it seem that there was any struggle involved. Investigators, however, did find different types of beer bottles at the scene.”

Former Kaizer Chiefs and AmaZulu player Siyabonga Nomvethe said of the incident:

“Nxele was a good player, full of respect because we come from the same township – KwaMashu. This brutality of him being killed like this, it is painful because I don’t remember him as a person who was troublesome because he was a football player."
“I spoke to him about bringing his young boy to AmaZulu to try his luck for trials during the off-season because we don’t have space for trials when the season of the DDC is on."

Tunisian player burns himself to death

Earlier in the week, Sports Brief reported another tragedy from much further afield.

Tunisian football player Nizar Issaoui died from burns suffered after setting himself alight earlier this week as a protest against “police injustice”.

Issaoui, a former player for Tunisian Ligue Professionnelle 1 team US Monastir, posted a video on Facebook in which he stated that he was protesting against being falsely accused of terrorism. This occurred in the province of Kairouan in the North African state.
