Football is one of the highest-paid sports and being a footballer is one of the highest-paid professions in the world, with weekly basic salaries and bonuses included.

Cristiano Ronaldo is the footballer earning the most in the world, with a reported salary of £173 million per year in his two-and-half-year contract when he joined Saudi Pro League side, Al-Nassr in January.

Give Me Sport reports that Paris Saint-Germain have the highest combined wage bill in Europe, with an annual payout of over £350 mil to players including Kylian Mbappe, Lionel Messi, and Neymar Junior.

Goalkeeper: David De Gea

Manchester United's David De Gea is the highest-paid keeper in the world, with a basic salary of £375,000 per week. His contract expires in the summer and he has agreed to take a pay cut to remain at the club.

Right-back: Reece James

Last year, the Chelsea academy graduate signed a new contract until 2028 and was rewarded with a huge salary of £250,000 per week, to wave off interest from European giants, Real Madrid.

Centre-backs: Sergio Ramos, David Alaba

Sergio Ramos departed Real Madrid for PSG after 16 successful years, with the club deciding against giving him a new contract, as reported by Marca.

He was replaced by a free agent, David Alaba, who also left Bayern Munich after 10 years. The two are the highest-paid centre-backs: Ramos reportedly earns £463,000 per week while Alaba earns £382,000.

Left-back: Jordi Alba

The Spanish full-back earns a reported £353,000 per week but took a pay cut of about 25% to help Barcelona's financial woes, by deferring part of his salary.

Defensive midfielders: Sergio Busquets, Frenkie De Jong

The Barcelona duo of Busquets and De Jong are the highest-paid in their positions, earning a reported £628,000 and £637,000 per week, respectively.

The Dutch midfielder resisted a move to the Premier League last summer despite interest from Chelsea and Manchester United.

Attackers: Neymar Jr, Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappe

The PSG trio of Neymar, Messi, and Mbappe are the highest-paid across their positions with reported salaries of £957,000, £1,000,000 and £1,222,000 per week, respectively.

All three face uncertain futures at the club, with Forbes reporting the Argentina captain received an offer of £350m per year from Saudi Pro League club, Al-Hilal.

Striker: Cristiano Ronaldo

The 38-year-old joined Al-Nassr in Saudi Arabia after his Manchester United contract was terminated before the World Cup. He signed football's most expensive contract worth £173m per year; around £3,327,000 weekly.
