  • Jamie Carragher made some interesting comments on social media recently, sparking an interesting debate
  • The Liverpool legend defended Virgil Van Dijk from claims he did not compare to the likes of Terry and Vidic
  • According to Carragher, the Dutch centre-back has had more of an impact in a football team than the others

An interesting debate has ignited on social media after Jamie Carragher came to the fierce defence of under-fire centre-back, Virgil Van Dijk.

Van Dijk was among the players that was poorly rated after Liverpool’s 2-2 draw against Arsenal, with heavy focus on his role in Gabriel Martinelli’s opener.

In an attempt to clear the ball, the Dutchman sent the ball on the path of Gabriel Martinelli, who poked the ball in the net, as reported by the BBC.

His performance on Sunday led to fans resorting to the nickname 'Van-Mickey', while a tweet from user @Football_Tweet summed up what a large section of fans thought.

“Virgil Van Dijk's drop off is actually insane. People were comparing him to Terry, Kompany, Rio and Vidić."

Carragher to Van Dijk's rescue

The tweet went so viral that it attracted the attention of Carragher, who knows a thing or two about defensive duties from his time at Liverpool.

“VVD is far better than Vidic, who was a top CB, but have you forgot his performances against Torres?” Carragher said on Twitter. “Rio & JT had poor seasons in their career like all players, VVD is having one now. No CB in the PL era has ever had VVD’s impact on a team.”

Van Dijk took the Premier League by storm since moving to Liverpool from Southampton in 2018. His exemplary performance helped him win the Premier League player of the season in the 2018/19 campaign.

As far as Vidic is concerned, the defender was crucial for Manchester United in a nine-year spell at Old Trafford. In his time, he helped United win the Premier League five times.

Meanwhile, fans have had their say on Carragher's sentiments on social media.

Fans on Carragher's VVD comments

@CharIieBennett said:

"Only Liverpool fans compared him to Terry, Kompany and Rio. He was on their level for two years - three at a push - but never had longevity to be considered an all-time great."

@EvertonMatt_ added:

"This is what happens when you flood the media with ex LFC players. Meanwhile in the real world"

@Kyari13 said:

"To clean for a top CB. Doesn't commit into tackles, timid, never bled to wear a face mask, never lost his ribbon, jersey ironed from 1st to 90th minute."

@amanhasnonamexx commented:

"You can never compare players from different eras, play, pace, rules totally different. VAR was not around in the days of Terry, Rio etc so they could get away with being more physical. Makes me laugh when people compare players of totally different eras."

Klopp claims Arsenal were lucky

Elsewhere, Sports Brief reported on Liverpool boss, Jurgen Klopp’s sentiments after the draw against Arsenal.

He strongly believes the Gunners were lucky to come out with a draw, especially after bottling a two-goal lead.

Liverpool, after drawing level in the 87th minute, then had two late chances for a winner but missed out.
