  • Mason Mount is yet to agree to a new deal at Chelsea, with clubs like Liverpool interested in poaching him
  • Mount would be wary of other stars who have in the past left the club and instantly regretted the decision
  • Eden Hazard headlines this list as the Belgian continues to 'waste away' on the bench at Real Madrid

Chelsea have spent loads of cash since Roman Abramovich took over the club in 2003. As in any business model, spending money doesn't usually guarantee success, but you'd rather have the option of having it.

Mason Mount has continued to dominate headlines with his contract extension talks believed to be at an impasse.

The Chelsea player of the year for two consecutive seasons might be tempted to quit the club. Stars have in the past quit Chelsea. Some regretted it, while for others, like Kevin De Bruyne and Mohamed Salah, it turned out to be a masterstroke.

As Mount's talks continue, we take a look at some of the players who wish they remained at Chelsea. The grass is not always greener on the other side.

1. Willian

By his own admission, the Brazilian revealed that leaving Chelsea was one of the worst missteps he had made in his career.

He joined Arsenal in 2021 with the promise that the Gunners would win the Champions League in 3 years. Whether that's true or not remains to be seen. However, Chelsea won the Champions League, a trophy Willian has never won, the same season he left for Arsenal.

His lucrative contract was terminated, took a detour back to his home country before returning to London with Fulham.

2. Eden Hazard

After seven glittering years in a Chelsea shirt, Hazard decided to fulfil his boyhood dream of playing for Real Madrid.

No Chelsea fan faulted him; however sad they were to see the Belgian leave. He came from Lille, saw Stamford Bridge and conquered England.

However, his dream evaporated with constant injuries in the Spanish capital. The meteoric rise of Vinicius Junior didn't make things easier either.

There's no doubt that a prime Hazard would bench anyone bar Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. But he has been reduced to sitting on the bench, hardly getting any playing time under Carlo Ancelotti.

3. Michael Ballack

Well, this wasn't entirely his doing. Chelsea had for so long had the longstanding policy under Roman Abramovich that players over 30 years could only get one-year extensions.

Ballack, one of the most gifted midfielders of his generation, wanted a two-year contract extension.

The disagreement forced the German back to his old club Bayer Leverkusen despite his desire to see out his playing career in Londo.

One year after he left, Chelsea won the Champions League. He has in the past admitted that he should have just taken the deal the club was offering.

4. David Luiz

The Brazilian played for Chelsea over two spells.

He first left Chelsea to join Paris Saint-Germain before returning after two years. He left to join Arsenal and despite playing a starring role in their FA Cup win, he was booted out due to erratic defending.

5. Diego Costa

Well, in all fairness, the regret here is both on the player and the club. It would be fair to say that Chelsea has never found another striker in the mould of Costa since his enforced departure in 2017.

Antonio Conte showed him the door despite the Brazilian-born Spanish striker having starred in two Premier League triumphs.

He returned to Atletico Madrid, where he struggled for game time. He went back to his native Brazil before returning to the Premier League with Wolves.

He has failed to nail down a spot in Julen Lopetegui's side.

Lampard to help Mount talks

Sports Brief has also reported on how the appointment of Frank Lampard as caretaker boss could be a masterstroke in convincing Mason Mount to agree to new terms at the club.

Say what you want about Mount's form this season, but it would be foolish for Chelsea to allow him to leave. His 'dad' could help ease the contract negotiations.

Mount has endured a difficult time this season and has been an unused substitute in Chelsea's last two games.
