  • Manchester United have prioritised the signing of a prolific striker this summer
  • The Red Devils recruited Wout Weghorst in January on a short-term basis
  • However, the Dutchman has failed to live up to his billing at Old Trafford, having scored just two goals so far

Manchester United have been backed to strengthen their attack line this summer following their struggles in front of the goal this season.

The Red Devils have been without a prolific striker for the better part of the second half of the campaign following Cristiano Ronaldo's premature departure during the January transfer window.

Ronaldo was forced out of Old Trafford after his explosive interview with Piers Morgan in the run-up to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

The tell-it-all interview saw Ronaldo sent packing, with his lucrative contract ripped apart.

Wout Weghorst flops

With Anthony Martial prone to injuries, the Red Devils were forced to find a cover for Ronaldo.

The club subsequently landed the signing of Wout Weghorst on loan, with the Dutchman infamously pushing to move to Old Trafford from Benfica, where he was on loan.

However, Weghorst's stint at the Theatre of Dreams has not quite gone according to plan, with the forward struggling to make an impact since his arrival.

The 30-year-old has scored only twice since his move to Man United, netting his long-awaited first goal at Old Trafford during United's 4-1 win over Real Betis.

Man United scouting for 6 strikers

It is understood that Manchester United are monitoring six strikers as they plan to bolster their squad in the summer.

According to The Mirror, this development comes just days after United suffered a 2-0 humbling defeat against Newcastle.

The publication reports that the defeat underscored underlying weaknesses in the United team, with the striking department the most glaring.

The Athletic claims that Tottenham talisman Harry Kane is top on United's transfer wish list alongside Napoli's top marksman Victor Osimhen.

Benfica's Goncalo Ramos is also being scouted, while Brighton ace Evan Ferguson has also attracted admirers at Old Trafford after getting praising from Kylian Mbappe.

Rising stars, Randal Kolo Muani and Atalanta's Rasmus Hojlund, are also said to be on United's radar.

Why Ten Hag dropped Weghorst

Earlier, Sports Brief reported Manchester United boss, Erik ten Hag has opened up on his decision to drop Wout Weghorst during their Premier League clash against Brentford on Wednesday night.

Weghorst was not part of United's lineup for the encounter staged at Old Trafford, with ten Hag calling on Marcus Rashford to lead the line.

The Dutch striker has come under immense criticism since his Red Devils move, with the forward failing to make any real impact since his arrival.
