  • Wout Weghorst was not part of Manchester United's starting XI against Brentford on Wednesday night
  • Erik ten Hag's decision to drop him came at a time when the Dutch striker is facing some heavy criticism
  • Weghorst had previously started every game for United since joining Old Trafford on loan in January

Manchester United boss, Erik ten Hag has opened up on his decision to drop Wout Weghorst during their Premier League clash against Brentford on Wednesday night.

Weghorst was not part of United's lineup for the encounter staged at Old Trafford, with ten Hag calling on Marcus Rashford to lead the line.

The Dutch striker has come under immense criticism since his Red Devils move, with the forward failing to make any real impact since his arrival.

However, not many had expected the Dutchman to drop Weghorst, especially considering United are without a prolific striker after the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo and Anthony Martial's injury struggles.

Ten Hag explains dropping Weghorst

Ten Hag has now disclosed why he started Jadon Sancho ahead of Weghorst during the Brentford encounter.

According to the United boss, his decision was purely based on Sancho's creativity.

"Creativity. Jadon has made good progress since he came back," he told MUTV.
"You know he can play the final pass, he can make action one-on-one, he can move in behind and score a goal, so that’s the reason why," he added.

Ten Hag's tactical tweak certainly paid off, with Marcus Rashford earning his side a vital 1-0 win to reignite their Champions League hopes.

Gary Neville defends Weghorst

While many have slammed the Dutchman as a failed signing for the Red Devils, a legend-turned-pundit has come to his defence.

Sports Brief reported on Gary Neville slammed critics of Weghorst, believing the United forward does not deserve to be criticised

The former Wolfsburg striker has received credit for his work rate on the pitch and his skills at hold-up play but fails to score goals.
