Graham Potter’s reign as Chelsea manager has finally come to an end after a turbulent seven months in charge of the Stamford Bridge club.

Potter, who replaced Thomas Tuchel in September 2022, leaves the club on the back of another lowly defeat, this time at the hands of Aston Villa.

Chelsea released a statement on April 2, confirming the English manager's departure from the Blues.

"[Potter] has agreed to collaborate with the club to facilitate a smooth transition. In his time with the club, Graham has taken us to the quarter-final of the Champions League, where we will face Real Madrid. Chelsea would like to thank Graham for all his efforts and contribution and wish him well for the future."

Defeat to Villa was Potter’s 11th loss in 31 games in charge at the club.

Moments before the sacking was announced, The Sun reported that the English manager was called to an emergency meeting with co-owner of the Blues, Todd Boehly on Sunday evening.

Later, Boehly released a statement of his own saying he had 'the highest degree of respect for Graham as a coach and as a person'.

How Potter's sacking unfolded

The former Brighton & Hove Albion boss made a promising start to life at Chelsea, going nine games without tasting defeat.

He also comfortably guided the club to the knockout stages of the Champions League, but things started to go awry just before the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

The first sign that things were not well was in a 4-1 defeat to his former team, which was followed by defeats to Arsenal and Newcastle.

Manchester City then knocked them out of the Carabao Cup, prompting Blues fans to begin calling for the Englishman’s dismissal.

After the World Cup, Chelsea resumed with a 2-0 win over Bournemouth and followed this up with a draw against struggling Nottingham Forest.

Successive defeats by Man City in the league and FA Cup then followed.

Chelsea fans celebrate Potter's sacking

Sports Brief also reported that Chelsea fans celebrated Potter's dismissal after news of his sacking emerged.

In his last press conference in charge, the Blues' manager appeared defeated after the defeat to Aston Villa.

The west Londoners have endured a frustrating run of results under Potter and are now in 11th place.
