Alexis Sanchez has explained why he snubbed Manchester City in preference for a move to their cross-city rivals Manchester United.
Sanchez looked set to join Pep Guardiola's team in January 2018, only for a last-minute persuasion from Jose Mourinho to change his mind.
At that time, Sanchez was one of the best forwards in the Premier League under Arsene Wenger at Arsenal. His previous relationship with Guardiola at Barcelona made people think that City had an advantage in the race to land the Chilean.
But as the 34-year-old explains now, Mourinho called him with the promise of giving him the legendary number 7 shirt.

"I was about to go to City. I spoke to Guardiola every day, he told me happy birthday. He was like my dad. Suddenly the cell phone rings. Mourinho tells me, 'Alexis, here is the number seven available for you. It wasn’t a money thing, so everyone knows," as quoted by Mirror.
Attack on Man City
Now at Marseille, Sanchez dropped a brutal swipe at Manchester City over their inability to win the Champions League.
"I would have liked to have gone to City, yes. We would have won the Champions League by now. In the final, I would have done something."
Manchester City are yet to win Europe's lucrative prize despite spending a lot of money since 2008. The final Sanchez is referring to is the 2021 final, where Guardiola was beaten by Thomas Tuchel's Chelsea.
