  • Much has been said about Didier Deschamps picking Kylian Mbappe over Antoine Griezmann as France's new captain
  • Griezmann's seniority and experience in the team made him the obvious pick but Deschamps had other ideas
  • Any issue between the two players were quickly shot down as they partnered in the Netherlands demolition on Friday

Kylian Mbappe began his reign as France captain in emphatic fashion by bagging a brace and an assist as they swept aside the Netherlands on March 24th.

The 2018 World Champions won 4-0 to quickly quieten down the noise this week surrounding the captaincy issue.

Antoine Griezmann is said to have wanted it, but Head Coach Didier Deschamps gave it to Mbappe instead, much to the disappointment of the Atletico Madrid star. The vacancy presented itself after Hugo Lloris retired from national team duties after the World Cup.

The duo linked up for the first goal, with Mbappe setting up Griezmann. Dayot Upamecano added a second one before Mbappe put the game beyond Dutch reach before the 30th minute. The Paris Saint-German star rounded off the rout in the second half.

With Griezmann looking to have accepted his fate, an old video of Mbappe has resurfaced online, with fans thinking it helped Deschamps make his decision.

Mbappe's World Cup final speech

In the video, Mbappe is seen giving a passionate speech to his teammates during halftime. The video was taken during the 2022 World Cup final. The Les Bleus had put on a disaster class in the first half against Lionel Messi's Argentina.

They needed two goals to be back in the game and from where many people sat, that would have been technically impossible. But Mbappe saw it differently.

"It's the match of a lifetime. It's every four years," shouted Mbappe. "We can't do worse than what we did. We can come back," as quoted by the Mirror.

The comeback

True to his word, France found a way back in the second half, with Mbappe himself scoring twice to force the game into extra time. Unluckily for the 24-year-old, Argentina beat them on post-match penalties.

A leader is often relied on to pick up his teammates during the stickiest of times, either through his performances, words or actions. Mbappe seemingly has the complete package. Griezmann might be the most important cog in Deschamps' set up but his attacking counterpart has an edge with his leadership acumen.

And at only 24, his era at the helm is set to be very interesting for French supporters.

Mbappe dispels feud between him and Griezmann

Sports Brief had earlier reported that Mbappe has opened up about his discussion with Antoine Griezmann after he was named captain of the France national team.

The decision by head coach Didier Deschamps to name Mbappe as captain has left the Atletico Madrid forward disappointed.

Speaking about the mood of Griezmann, Mbappe admitted the decision did not sit well with his compatriot.
