  • Manchester United players reportedly exchanged messages about winning the Premier League this season
  • Erik ten Hag's charges felt confident enough they would be able to hunt down Manchester City and Arsenal
  • However, that confidence took a serious beating after Liverpool humbled them over the weekend at Anfield

The reported WhatsApp messages of Manchester United players before their game against Liverpool depicted a squad that was full of confidence.

That same confidence might be at an all-time low after the 7-0 shellacking they received at Anfield.

However, before the game, as reported by GMS, the players exchanged messages about how they could close the gap between Manchester City and Arsenal - and perhaps go all the way to win the title.

It does not take a task force for one to decipher that Erik ten Hag has done wonders at Old Trafford since his appointment last year.

Before the Anfield rout, there was talk that maybe the Red Devils would make the title pursuit a three-horse race.

United players shared WhatsApp messages

Man United players are said to have exchanged messages in their WhatsApp group about how they could still claim the Premier League title in ten Hag's maiden season in England.

The Dutch coach has always shushed the prospect of his side winning the quadruple, but his players had started to look ahead at the possibility of winning a massive prize.

However, Jurgen Klopp gave them a harsh reality check as they were torn apart in a performance the Red Devils would quickly want to forget. It will be interesting to see what that damaging defeat would do to United's confidence.

The Premier League title now seems a tad over-ambitious, with the defeat leaving them 14 points off the top of the table with a game in hand.

Ten Hag 'punished his players'

Sports Brief earlier reported on ten Hag reacting to defeat against Liverpool on March 5th, with a post-mortem into the Anfield debacle set to last until Man United take to the pitch next.

The Red Devils shipped in seven goals from a ruthless Reds side who have had their struggles this season. While United does struggle at Anfield, no one could have predicted this.

Ten Hag was understandably infuriated during his post-match conference and blasted his players for being unprofessional, especially in the second half, when they fell to pieces.
