  • Manchester United players were seen reporting for training and recovery sessions on Monday morning
  • This came only hours after they differed a nerve-wracking 7-0 defeat to Liverpool
  • Erik ten Hag will be looking to reinspire belief in a side that has shown massive improvement this season

Manchester United players reportedly went back to training on Monday, barely a few hours after suffering their worst defeat in Premier League history.

Erik ten Hag's charges were torn apart by Liverpool as their fiercest rivals put seven goals past them at Anfield.

Braces from Darwin Nunez, Cody Gakpo and Mohamed Salah, plus a late solitary goal from Roberto Firmino, saw Liverpool shake United's belief, after making much progress under ten Hag this season.

It was only last week that they won the Carabao Cup at the expense of Newcastle United, days after seeing off Barcelona in the Europa League.

Ten Hag reported earlier

The squad quickly embarked on getting answers as to what went wrong in Merseyside as the stars were seen reporting for training on Monday morning. Casemiro and Diogo Dalot were among the player photographers driving into the Carrington training ground.

The Mirror reports that the players arrived at 9 am, with ten Hag having arrived two hours earlier. The report further states that a source close to the club said:

"Ten Hag was obviously furious and told them they were lucky to be getting on the team bus back to Old Trafford and not made to travel back with the fans."

United will have a chance to make amends on Thursday when they play Real Betis in the first leg of the Europa League round of 16.

What went wrong for United?

Sports Brief reported that ten Hag was at pains to try to explain exactly what went wrong for his Manchester United side, who spectacularly lost 7-0 to Liverpool on March 5.

Liverpool came up with a complete performance, interestingly against one of their fierce rivals, as they completely blew away their opponents. Speaking after the game, a seemingly calm ten Hag claimed his side 'lost their heads'.

Ten Hag ceded the loss was a tough setback but expressed confidence his team could bounce back.
