Benzema scored 62 goals during that time period and also won the European Nations League, the UEFA Champions League, La Liga, the Spanish Super Cup and the European Super Cup. He also won the Ballon d’Or.

FIFA have been criticised for naming Messi the winner, purportedly solely because of Argentina’s World Cup win.

As noted by SportBible, Benzema also posted a cryptic message to his Instagram minutes after Messi was declared the winner, sharing a video to his Instagram story of a man saying, 'Liar, yes, you liar'.

The Real Madrid star was not at the awards ceremony himself as his team chose not to attend the event in Paris.

Benzema takes jab at FIFA

Real Madrid forward, Benzema has described FIFA as liars after Messi was named the 2022 best player at The Best Awards in Paris, France.

Messi beat Benzema and Mbappe to win the coveted award for the year's best player for a second time, Sports Brief previously reported.

However, Benzema feels the accolade was given to the wrong person after his stellar 2022 with Real Madrid, including winning La Liga.

Madrid to skip awards ceremony

The Best FIFA Football Awards took place in Paris but there was a notable absence at this year’s event.

Sports Brief also reported on Real Madrid’s coach, Carlo Ancelotti and his players not attending the awards.

Los Blancos did not travel to France for the awards as they prepare for a Copa del Rey clash with Barcelona.
