Nothing could have prepared Virgil Van Dijk for the brutal response he got from a journalist representing an Argentine TV station at the FIFA The Best Awards in Paris on February 27.
The journalist brought up the feisty quarter-final World Cup encounter between Argentina and the Netherlands in Qatar.
Van Dijk led his team at the Lusail Stadium on December 9, looking to get one better of Lionel Messi's Argentina and book their spot in the last four. It was a game marked by high emotions as the centre referee, Antonio Mateu Lahoz issued 16 yellow cards.
Weghorst's masterclass
What looked like an easy win for Argentina after two early goals was overturned by Wout Weghorst, who came off the bench to score twice and force the game into extra time, and eventually penalties.

Van Dijk missed the first spot kick for his side as the Dutch crashed out of the tournament. In Paris, a journalist, Gaston Edul, sought an audience with the Liverpool defender who blanked him.
Not taking it lightly, the journalist responded with a savage remark:
"Well, Virgil van Dijk told me no... it doesn't matter. Argentina won the quarter-finals..." he said as translated by the Sun.
The 31-year-old was in Paris after he was voted into the FIFPRO Men's World XI of 2022. Messi took top honours yet again after he bagged the FIFA The Best Player award.

Meanwhile, Real Madrid forward, Karim Benzema has described FIFA as liars after Messi was named the 2022 best player at The Best Awards in Paris, France.
Sports Brief reported on the Argentine beating his Paris Saint-Germain teammate, Kylian Mbappe and Benzema to win the best player award for a second time.
However, the French veteran feels the accolade was given to the wrong person after his stellar 2022, which included winning La Liga and the Champions League.
