Lionel Messi was crowned the best player in the world for a record-extending seventh time at the FIFA The Best Awards ceremony held in Paris, France, on Monday, February 27.
The genius number 10 was Argentina’s talisman at the 2022 World Cup, scoring seven goals – including a brace in that epic final win over France, and providing three assists during the Mundial.
The Paris Saint-Germain superstar, who polled 52 votes, was bestowed with the honour after toppling teammate Kylian Mbappe (44 votes) and Real Madrid's Karim Benzema (34 votes), per FIFA.

Despite missing the coveted prize to Messi, Kylian Mbappe was delighted for his clubmate, with whom he has formed a strong partnership on and off the field.
In a video making the rounds on social media, seen by Sports Brief, Mbappe, who sat between his dad and Leo Messi, embraced the latter after he was named the Best Men's Player.
