Lionel Messi has been urged by former Barcelona star, Bernd Schuster to preserve his legacy by retiring from international football.

The Paris Saint-Germain superstar scored seven goals including a brace in the final against France as Argentina ended their 36-year wait to win the World Cup again.

Schuster explained the reason behind his unusual request is that people should remember Messi winning the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar as his last act for La Albiceleste, Sportskeeda reports.

"Messi can still play for a few years, but he should retire from the Argentine national team. He has to keep that final image with the World Cup with that shirt. I see it as difficult for him to be in the next World Cup, I don't know."

Messi exploring other club options

Meanwhile, Messi is said to be increasingly uncertain about extending his contract with PSG, with just a few months to the end of his current deal with the Ligue 1 outfit, Daily Express reports.

The seven-time Ballon d’Or winner and his father, Jorge held a meeting with the Parisians' officials on Wednesday but it is believed the parties could not come to an agreement.

Messi's contract at Parc des Princes expires at the end of the season and the French giants are reportedly keen to extend the 35-year-old veteran's deal beyond the summer.

Messi apologises to PSG fans

Earlier, Sports Brief reported on PSG's superstars still coming to terms with their Champions League defeat.

The French side were beaten by Bayern Munich 1-0 in the first leg of their UCL Round of 16 match earlier this week.

Afterwards, Messi and Neymar led the team toward the PSG Ultras to express thanks and also apologise for the loss.
