Major League Soccer side, San Jose Earthquakes have signed Ghana defender Jonathan Mensah.

The veteran MLS centre-back joins San Jose from former champions Columbus Crew.

Mensah is entering his sixth year in the American soccer league, having spent five years with the Black and Golds.

"The San Jose Earthquakes have acquired Ghana National Team defender Jonathan Mensah from the Columbus Crew in exchange for $100k of General Allocation Money (GAM) in 2023 and $100k of GAM in 2024.

"The Quakes will also pay Columbus $150k of GAM in 2024 if Mensah is on San Jose’s roster after the 2024 Roster Compliance Date, and $150k of GAM in 2025 if Mensah is on San Jose’s roster after the 2025 Roster Compliance Date. Mensah, who acquired a U.S. Green Card during his time with Columbus, will not occupy an international slot on the Quakes’ roster," wrote San Jose on their official website.

Mensah won the MLS title in 2020 with Columbus Crew as captain and also led the club to the Campeones trophy.

The 31-year-old represented Ghana at two World Cups and was a member of the U20 team that won the global tournament in 2009 in Egypt.

Mensah welcomes Ghanaian singer

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that Jonathan Mensah gave Ghanaian musician Kofi Kinaata a warm embrace after spotting him in the stands after a game between Columbus Crew and Atlanta United in the United States.

The Ghana defender, who is also the captain of Columbus Crew, featured for the Gold and Blacks as they picked a point against the former Major League Champions.

In a video posted on social media, Mensah beamed with joy as he sighted Kinaata in the stands, before walking to him to give him a hug.

Mensah responds to treatment

Jonathan Mensah is responding to treatment and he is in stable condition, according to the Ghana Football Association.

The defender was involved in a horrific injury during the game between Ghana and the Central African Republic in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers in Angola on Sunday.

In a statement released by the GFA on their official website, the defender is in good condition after suffering concussion.
